Social Context and Recognition of Issues

Given that the international community has agreed on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), there has been an acceleration in the development of goals and frameworks for climate change mitigation and adaptation and the creation of a recycling-oriented society. As such, demands and expectations for corporate initiatives have grown even stronger.
FamilyMart has approximately 16,500 stores nationwide, which are visited by about 15 million customers per day. Daily business activities result in annual CO₂ emissions of approximately 6.5million tons-CO₂, with waste from stores of about 260,000 tons and food waste of about 56,000 tons. We believe that proactively taking measures to address these environmental issues is not only important for FamilyMart's business, but is also our social responsibility.

To this end, FamilyMart has an Environmental Policy and a Biodiversity Conservation Policy, and has also formulated the Famima Eco Vision 2050 for our mid- to long-term environmental objectives. We have set numerical targets for three areas of particular priority: (1) greenhouse gas reduction, (2) plastic countermeasures, and (3) reduction of food wastage, and we are actively working to resolve environmental issues.
Because FamilyMart operates stores throughout Japan that serve as part of the social infrastructure, we are committed to achieving a sustainable society as a company that contributes to the SDGs.

Vision

FamilyMart regards local communities as part of our “family" and aims to contribute to the creation of sustainable communities and society by providing products and services. Based on this concept, we are working to solve environmental problems through our environmental management system.
Our activities not only comply with environmental laws and regulations, but we also set numerical targets for sustainability, including our Famima Eco Vision 2050, and work to achieve those targets.

Specific Initiatives

Basic Approach

FamilyMart obtained ISO 14001 certification for all its stores and business establishments since March 1999 and continues to promote the development of environmentally friendly convenience stores in conformance with our environmental management system.
We intend to strengthen the environmental management system and further promote environmental efforts.

Value Creation

FamilyMart has a store network across the country and promotes environmental efforts throughout the supply chain in collaboration with local communities and business partners. We will spread more stable and efficient environmental measures through our business, which cover store equipment, sales activities, and beautification of the community environment.

Operational Structure

For issues related to sustainability, including environmental issues, the Sustainability Promotion Department collaborates with departments, groups, and offices that oversee regional operations to implement initiatives based on the Sustainability Action Plan. One of our core activities is the maintenance and improvement of the environmental management system for our stores. In this regard, supervisors provide consulting through regular store visits and communicate guidelines and improvement measures related to the environmental management system to ensure that all stores follow the system reliably.
