To mark the renewal of “Famima Chinese steamed bun”, starting from August 2020, we will be gradually replacing printing ink used on its paper bags with “Biomass Ink”, an eco-friendly ink manufactured from natural components derived from plant matter. Thus, unlike traditional fuels such as gasoline, the biomass used in this ink is a renewable organic resource. In addition to being a sustainable resource, plants absorb CO2 during their growth process for use in photosynthesis, resulting in a smaller carbon footprint as opposed to the use of fossil fuels, and contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

Due to the mandatory added charge for plastic bags, we began charging for plastic bags from July 1st, 2020. Thanks to the understanding and cooperation of our customers, the plastic bag refusal rate has increased to 77% in July, up from 30% prior to the policy change. In order to further reduce the usage of plastic bags, we have launched the “Eco Stamps” campaign on FamiPay, our cashless payment application. Customers making payments through the application will receive Eco Stamps for refusing plastic bags, which, at 30 stamps, can be exchanged for product coupons. Since the launch, we have now given out approximately 6 million Eco Stamps in July alone. We will continue to contribute to the reduction of plastic bags and plastics waste through various initiatives.
FamilyMart will collaborate with Euglena to recycle used cooking oil (waste cooking oil) from select stores into raw material for “Euglena Biodiesel”, for use in our delivery vehicles. We have launched this initiative aiming for widespread adoption of the Euglena Biodiesel in the next 20-30 years. Going forward, FamilyMart and Euglena will continue our collaboration, not only in the food industry, but also sustainable health and environmental initiatives through the promotion of biofuels.
